Chapter 20. Pleasant Burden

“Did you find him?” Serbina grips the armrests of her chair tightly.

Her flowing blonde hair cascades over the leather backrest, framing a pale face adorned with sorrowful eyes and plump rosy lips. Through the expansive windows, the dense skyline of skyscrapers is swallowed by a blood-red sunset. Evening descends. The businesswoman permits herself a rare vulnerability —unbuttoning the stifling collar of her blouse, removing her hairpins, and discarding her usual mask of icy detachment. She lets her melancholic emotions freely animate her features.

Caught in the allure of Serbina’s mournful beauty, Redrick feels a sweet hope tighten his heart involuntarily. It happens for the thousandth time, but the seasoned bodyguard quickly snaps back to his professional demeanor.

“No, my lady,” he replies, straightening up. “We have nothing more than a blurred composite sketch of his face. The saboteur avoided being caught on the street cameras. He destroyed the limousine’s video recordings when he shot the dashboard with the pistol. The hard drive is beyond recovery. He's a consummate professional to have thought of that in the heat of the moment.”

“He’s just a boy.” Serbina rolls her blue eyes. “A stupid boy. We’re trying to save the world, and he comes up with God knows what.”

She purses her lips, paying no heed to Redrick’s labored breathing. Her every gesture has the power to captivate, driving mortal men to the brink of obsession. She’s accustomed to the effect she has. Rare are those who can maintain composure in her presence, resisting the allure of even a fleeting affectionate gaze. But that boy was different. Far from being enchanted, he punched Serbina in the stomach, twisted her hair around his fist, and hurled threats and insults, even calling her ‘blondie.’ Serbina isn’t accustomed to this.

Yet she resisted doing what she now knew she had to do. She’s been spending the whole day hoping that her loyal bodyguard would find him. It has been in vain.

“Thank you, Redrick, for your efforts. You’re free for the rest of the day.”

“Thank you, my lady.” Redrick bows, but Serbina is already looking away.

Turning to her computer, she initiates a video call with her superiors. A fancy-looking young man appears on the screen, his gaze stern and judgmental.

“The Heaven Throne has read your report, Serbina. Congratulations on the patents. Now, Blackout won’t get their hands on the unique composite superconductor. Without it, they’ll have trouble creating conduits for the portal to the Netherworld. They won’t be able to mass transport anyone any time soon. And they certainly can’t move an entire horde one creature at a time.”

“Thank you, Heaven Throne, for the praise,” Serbina says, her smile beaming.

“Now for the second part of your report.” The man interlaces his fingers. “Have you located the attacker?”

“No, sire.”

“I see. Summon the hound. Let the beast find him by scent.”

This was exactly what Serbina has feared — more bloodshed and more victims.

“Sire, it’s unlikely that we can control the beast. It’s wild and unpredictable. Our people could be in danger!”

“Don’t restrain the beast, just set it free.
